This is used for the suppression of cough. Cough occurs due to stimulation of Receptors in throat and respiratory passages. Non productive cough is not useful and it should be suppressed. Productive cough causes expulsion of secretion and foreign particles from respiratory passages. Anti Tussives act with the level of cough centre in brain and inhibit cough. Anti Tussives are used mainly for unproductive dry cough and if the cough is hazardous. Dextromethorphan is an anti tussive drug which exerts its action in CNS to elevate the threshold of coughing. Its potency is nearly equal to that of codeine. It does not inhibit ciliary activity and its anti tussive effect persists for 5-6 hours. In extremely high doses, it may produce CNS Depression.
