Description |
These are administered to patients
with dysuria/UTI for symptomatic relief as they increase
the pH of urine and there by the sensitive urethra
is less affected. Also they have a weak diuretic effect
there by increasing the flushing effect desired for
treating UTI. Also certain antimicrobials like sulphadrugs
& clotrimazole are more effective in alkalinic
medium therefore they also should not be given where
acidic medium is preferred e.g. with Nitrofurantoin,
Nalidixic acid and other quinolones. Over use may
cause systemic alkalosis. It is a system alkaliser
which relieves the discomfort of cystitis caused by
lower UTIs.
